If the E36 power top jams, there's a manual emergency release: a handle under the rear seat pulls a cable that disengages the gearmotors from their drives, freeing the mechanism so you can lift the top out of the well and draw it forward to the windshield by hand (an Allen key helps pull it fully home to latch).
After any manual operation you MUST re-synchronise it or it'll fight itself on the next powered cycle
