The E36 has two temperature sensors near the head/thermostat housing, and they're independent — one feeds the DME, the other drives the dash gauge, so one can fail without the other.
The DME sensor is an NTC thermistor whose resistance falls as it heats up. When it fails high-resistance or open, the DME reads the engine as far colder than it is and enriches permanently
