The E36 fuel filter lives underneath the car along the passenger (right) side, near or just ahead of the tank.
BMW's interval is loose — anywhere from Inspection II (about 36,000 miles) to roughly 60,000 miles or four years — so a practical every 30,000-40,000 miles is fine
