An ABS light on an E36 means the ABS module has faulted and switched the anti-lock system off — your normal brakes still work fully, you've just lost ABS until it's fixed.
By far the most common cause is a wheel-speed sensor: one of the four sensors at the hubs goes open-circuit, or its tip gets caked with metallic brake dust and rust so the signal drops out
