The E36 six fires each cylinder with its own individual coil bolted along the top of the engine — there's no distributor — so a dead coil shows up as a misfire on one cylinder: a stumble, a rough idle, a flashing or steady CEL with a cylinder-specific misfire code, often worst under load or when hot.
The fastest diagnosis is to swap the suspect coil with its neighbour and clear the codes
