An E36 that fires for a second and then dies is, classically, the EWS immobiliser. The DME gives the engine an initial squirt so it catches, then cuts fuelling and spark because EWS never authorised the start — a worn key transponder, a failing EWS module, or a bad ring antenna around the ignition lock will all do it
